Why Jim Larkin And Michael Lacey Slammed President Trump’s Pardon Of Joe Arpaio

It may not have surprised anyone but it did outrage various residents of Phoenix, Arizona when it was announced in 2017 that President Trump had pardoned former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio from any wrongdoing he might be charged with resulting from charges brought against him by a district judge. It especially upset journalists Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey when they heard of this pardon because they had seen firsthand injustice done to people in the Latino immigrant communities.

Arpaio was also known for having inmates wear pink attire in the county jails, having certain offenders housed in a desert prison which had basically only tents for shelter and was known as Tent City. He also was known for using the power of his position to go after critics and rivals.

Larkin and Lacey have been highly critical of President Trump and his policies which have aligned at times with Arpaio’s. Their current news organization, the Frontera Fund was founded to be a platform for immigrants and for other human rights foundations around the world.

Part of their efforts have been to work with local, state and federal lawmakers on immigration reform and finding initiatives to help immigrant communities, and holding corrupt lawmakers and law enforcement agencies accountable.

Larkin and Lacey’s work began over 40 years ago during the Vietnam War, and they considered the work they did to be a voice for the activists, and it was part of the reason their original parent company was known as Village Voice Media.

Village Voice Media’s first big paper was the Phoenix New Times which the two men had dropped out of college to start in the early 1970s, and it grew from an underground newspaper into a broader independent news organizations.

The New Times branched far beyond Phoenix to having editions circulating in Florida, Colorado and California among other places. It offered a lot of different perspectives on major issues from the Vietnam War all the way to the attacks of 9/11.

Larkin and Lacey had always had a highly contentious battle with Sheriff Arpaio since the time he took office in 1992, but it was in 2007 that it reached its height.

An issue involving a real estate purchase by Arpaio through which it seemed he had received mysterious funding was being looked at by a Phoenix New Times Reporter, and Arpaio started coming down on him, and subsequently Larkin and Lacey themselves for publishing information on the case. They were jailed and subjected to what a local judge deemed improbable cause and insufficient grounds to hold them, and after a formal hearing it was announced that all charges were dropped. Larkin and Lacey decided it was time to fight back against the abuse of power, and they began a lawsuit that lasted several years.

By 2013, the Maricopa County board of supervisors awarded them a settlement of $3.75 million and Larkin and Lacey used the funds from that to start the Frontera Fund. The foundation has grown into quite a large-scale operation.

Jim Larkin: Irish Folk Hero And Labor Leader

Jim Larkin is one of the most celebrated Irish folk heroes in history. Born in the slums of Liverpool, England in 1876, Larkin worked a variety of jobs as a child to help support the family.

Although Larkin had very little education, he was able to rise to the position of dock foreman. He was an avowed socialist and committed to fair pay and working conditions for all people. He joined the National Union of Dock Laborers (INUDL) and concentrated on labor organizing in 1905.

He became heavily involved in labor and continued to organize strikes. In Glasgow, Scotland, he led a protest against Chinese labor, reasoning that it would take away the livelihood of many Irishmen.

Larkin founded the Irish Transport and General Worker’s Union (ITGW) in 1907 after moving to Dublin.

He continued to travel the country and organized workers in Cork, Waterford and Dublin. In 1908, under the INUDL program, Larkin implemented a program that consisted of eight hour days, pension for people at the age of 60, national means of transport and work provisions for unemployed people.

After forming the Irish Labor Party, along with James Connolly in 1912, he led the most significant labor strike in Ireland’s history: The 1913 Lockout. More than 100,000 Irish workers went on strike against deplorable working conditions, low pay and the right to unionize.

In the end, hunger and loss of financial support forced workers to sign employee pledges. Not all strikers got their jobs back. Some were forced to enlist in the military and fight in World War I.

After spending time in America, he was deported back to Ireland in 1920. He continued to work on the behalf of Irish people and even joined the Irish Labor Party in 1945. Larkin died in 1947. A statue of Larkin was erected on O”Donnell Street in Dublin.

Fox News, The Talk-over Network, Get Lesson From Founder Of Human Rights Foundation

Fox News is famous for being the “talk over” network. You can see it on shows like Bill O’Reilly, where the host talks over the interviewee when the two cannot agree. The network likes to use interviews to make a point to their viewership, whether or not that point is fair or balanced. But there’s a recent propaganda-like interview with Human Rights Foundation founder Thor Halvorssen that seem to blow up in their face.

During a tense three minutes the hostess tries to get Thor Halvorssen to say that socialism is bad. Of course, the network is taking time to slam socialism because of the insurgent presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders who is a self-avowed democratic socialist. The hostess wastes no time in making her flawed point, asking Thor Halvorssen why socialism is a violation of basic human rights. A cool, calm, and collected Thor Halvorssen spends very little time being shocked or stunned and gets right to work qualifying that statement.

Socialism is not inherently evil, he says. In fact, countries like Denmark, Norway and Sweden are shining examples of socialist governments where human rights violations do not occur. Socialism is a form of government that can do good or bad depending on who’s in charge. Separation of power with checks and balances leads to a government for the people and by the people, even if it is socialist. Unchecked unilateral power can allow a dictator to use socialism in order to exploit people. But the Fox News hostess does not want to get bogged down in details and continually tries to make Thor Halvorssen say something bad about socialism.

According to, Thor Halvorssen tries to explain the definition of socialism or socialist agendas, but he gets talked over. Frustration leads him to declare his support for Bernie Sanders. The shock hostess squeals, “Why!?” This reddit thread shows how Thor Halvorssen then explained that he does not care what side of the political spectrum you come from and that you have his support if you advocate human rights, unlike Hillary Clinton and the leading Republican candidates. It turns out that Fox News couldn’t even slam Bernie Sanders with a “talk over” interview. It blew up in their face.
