Guilherme Paulus’s Story of Rising Above Challenges and Succeeding in the Travel and Tourism Industry

Guilherme Paulus has built a successful career as an entrepreneur dating back to when he started CVC in collaboration with Vicente Cerchiari in 1972. Despite the fact that upcoming entrepreneurs face numerous challenges in Brazil, being an entrepreneur in the country can be highly rewarding. Some of the obstacles entrepreneurs face in Brazil include high government taxes, lack of venture capital and unstable bureaucracy.

Who is Guilherme Paulus?

Born in 1949 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the renowned entrepreneur pursued business administration in university. He started off his career working at IBM as an intern. When he was 24 years old, Guilherme Paulus combined efforts with Vicente Cerchiari to start Operadora e Agencia de Viagens CVC Tour Ltda (CVCA) to expand and bring tourism to Brazil.

The Journey to success

Mr. Paulus had a vision for the Brazilian tourism industry. He was determined to transform the industry. He strategically located his company to target thousands of move enthusiasts in a large street within Santo Andre. The company continued to open outlets across Brazil promising to offer the best travel and tourism services. CVC opened stores in large retail malls across the country. He took the company public in 2009 and sold 63% of his stake at the company to Carlyle Group for $750 million. It started trading publicly in 2013. It grew to become the largest tourism company in the country with more than $5.2 billion sales per year, 1200 store fronts located across the world as well as more than 3,000 employees.

Investment genius

In 2005, he invested over $600 million in GJP Hotels & Resorts, a Brazilian company that has grown to have more than 3,000 rooms within 15 hotels and resorts across Brazil. He purchased a struggling airline called Webjet which had one charter airplane in 2006 and built it to become the third largest airline in Brazil with more than 20 airplanes and operations in 20 cities across the country.

Guilherme Paulus has been recognized widely for his efforts in the industry. Some of the awards he has received include Revolutionary Consumer Relations by Modern Consumer Magazine, Executive of Valor by Valor Economico, Entrepreneur of the Year by Isto E Dinheiro, and Personality of the Year by Viagem e Turismo of Editora Abril.
